What Japanese Travelers Buy in Taiwan: Individually Wrapped Souvenirs, Shelf Life and Japan Quarantine Rules
Starting from what Japanese travelers care about most (individual wrapping, shelf life and whether it can enter Japan), this guide lists official prices and shelf life for 18 items: six pineapple cakes, nougat crackers, tea snacks and supermarket snacks, plus Taiwan VAT refunds, Japan's duty-free allowance, liquids, and Japan's quarantine rules as revised in July 2026.
Compiled: November 1, 2026 (Taipei time). Prices are taken from each brand's official site (mostly checked in October 2026). Japan's quarantine and customs rules and Taiwan's VAT refund rules are summarized from public information from Japan's Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF), Japan Customs, Taiwan's Tourism Administration and Ministry of Finance. Rules can change, so check again before you travel.
When Japanese travelers choose souvenirs in Taiwan, three questions come up again and again: can I hand it out at work, will it keep long enough, and can I bring it into Japan? This guide starts from those three points. It covers the pineapple cakes, nougat crackers and tea snacks that Japanese travel media often recommend, with prices, shelf life, and notes on tax refunds, duty-free allowances and quarantine.
Taiwan's Central News Agency (CNA) reported in January 2025, citing retailers, that pineapple cake is still the souvenir foreign visitors buy most, and that Japanese visitors are especially fond of it. Travel platform KKday also said Japanese visitors prefer local pastries such as pineapple cake and butter pastry, while nougat crackers are the favorite of Korean visitors.
1. Before you buy: 4 practical checks
- Individual wrapping (kobetsu hōsō): In Japan it is common to share souvenirs with coworkers (bara-maki omiyage), so individually wrapped pieces are the easiest. In its taste tests, JCB's Taiwan travel guide even notes which pineapple cakes come in small packs that are "good for handing out" (ばらまき用としてもよい).
- Shelf life at room temperature (himochi): Several days often pass between getting home and handing the gift over. Each product below lists the shelf life the brand states, and anything under three weeks is flagged.
- Flavor: Sweet-and-salty nougat crackers, tangy native-pineapple cakes and snacks flavored with Taiwanese tea taste very different, so choose for the person receiving the gift.
- Packaging and weight: A sturdy box survives a packed suitcase better. For older relatives or business gifts, choose a gift box.
2. Pineapple cakes: 6 picks by recipient
1. Formal gifts where packaging matters: Okura Prestige Taipei The Nine Signature Pineapple Cake, 12 pieces
- Pineapple cake from the bakery of the Okura Prestige Taipei hotel. The packaging uses an artist's hand-drawn illustrations, and a Japanese Taiwan-travel site describes it as having "a luxurious package" (高級感のあるパッケージ).
- The filling blends Tainung No. 17 (Golden Diamond) pineapple with Taiwanese native pineapple. NT$620 for 12 on the official site, with a 21-day shelf life at room temperature. The official shop does not ship overseas, so buy it in Taiwan.
2. For fans of tartness and fruit texture: SunnyHills Pineapple Cake, 10 pieces
- The filling is cooked from Taiwanese native pineapple, so it is noticeably tart and fibrous. The pastry uses fresh eggs, natural butter and Japanese flour.
- Well known in Japan, partly because of its Minami-Aoyama store in Tokyo, designed by Kengo Kuma. NT$550 for 10 on the official site.
3. The classic: Chia Te Original Pineapple Cake, 12 pieces
- A long-established bakery on Nanjing East Road, Taipei. A Japanese Taiwan-travel site calls it "well known and a standard souvenir" (知名度が高く、定番のお土産). The main store often has a queue, so allow time.
4. Baked in the in-store workshop: Ichibanya Handmade Pineapple Cake
- In Zhongshan District, Taipei (3F, No. 35, Lane 45, Sec. 2, Zhongshan N. Rd.). The JCB guide describes a 100% pineapple filling with no additives, baked in the store's own workshop and sold the same day. Closed Wednesdays.
- The JCB guide records NT$450 for 10 and a 20-day shelf life. Because it keeps for a short time, buy it in the last few days of your trip.
5. A heritage brand you can also find at the airport: Jiu Zhen Nan Pineapple Cake Gift Box, 12 pieces
- A Kaohsiung bakery founded in 1890. The filling combines Tainung No. 17 Golden Diamond pineapple with winter-melon paste, the pastry contains cheese powder, and each cake comes in its own small gold box.
- CNA reported that duty-free retailer Ever Rich has long ranked it among the top 10 souvenirs with foreign visitors, "especially popular with Japanese and Thai visitors." The JCB guide notes branches at both Taoyuan and Songshan airports.
- NT$630 for the 12-piece box on the official site, about 50 days' shelf life, lacto-ovo vegetarian.
6. Long shelf life and small packs: Kuo Yuan Ye Golden Award Pineapple Cake, 10 pieces
- A long-established bakery founded in Shilin in 1867. The JCB guide describes its traditional filling of Taiwanese pineapple and winter melon as moderately sweet, with real pieces of fruit.
- The JCB guide records an 80-day shelf life and notes a 2-piece pack that is "good for handing out." It has stores at Songshan Airport and Taoyuan Airport Terminal 1.
3. Nougat crackers and nougat: sweet and salty
- Jia Vin Bakery Coffee Nougat Crackers, 20 pieces: Bite-size round nougat crackers from a small shop on Yongkang Street. The official site says they won a one-star iTQi award in 2025. NT$180 for 20.
- L'Atelier Lotus Scallion Nougat Crackers, 16 pieces: A small shop at No. 10, Lane 31, Yongkang Street, known for its scallion flavor. The shop suggests microwaving them for 10–15 seconds before eating for a softer texture.
- Chia Te Scallion Nougat Crackers, 12 pieces: Easy to pick up along with Chia Te's pineapple cakes. Each piece is individually wrapped, which makes them good for sharing. NT$180 for 12 on the official site.
- Sugar & Spice Nougat Crackers, Scallion & Salt, 16-piece Gift Box: Lightly salty scallion crackers sandwiching milky nougat. Sugar & Spice has a store on 2F of Taoyuan Airport Terminal 2 (before security), so you can still buy some before departure. NT$430 for 16 on the official site.
- Sugar & Spice French Nougat, Classic Bag, 406g: French-style nougat without crackers, made with butter from French milk and almonds; the brand says it uses no hardening agent. It comes in a bag, so you can divide it up yourself. List price NT$522 on the official site.
4. Tea snacks and Taiwanese flavors
- Nanami Sakura-do Sandwich Cookies, Wenshan Pouchong Tea, 5 pieces: The JCB guide says Nanami Sakura-do's pouchong and oolong Tieguanyin flavors, made with Taiwanese tea, are "especially popular with tourists" (観光客にとくに人気). NT$225 for the 5-piece light pack.
- HEARTIES Real Tea Popcorn, Oriental Beauty Tea, 80g: Popcorn flavored with real tea leaves. The brand states 25% less sugar, no artificial flavors or colors, and a 12-month shelf life unopened. NT$220 per bag.
- Dawn Cake Original Sun Cake, Wrapped Pack (8 pcs): Taichung sun cake from the same group as Miyahara, made with natural butter and no lard; lacto vegetarian. NT$400 for 8, with a carrier bag. The official shelf life is at least 14 days, shorter than the other items here, so give it away soon.
- JMM Canteen Tsukimi Salted Egg Yolk Su Xin Candy, 15 pieces: A flaky, layered candy. The Tsukimi flavor contains salted egg yolk for a sweet-salty taste. Japanese magazine CREA featured it in its Taiwan souvenir column and called the salted egg flavor the signature product. Contains egg; lacto-ovo vegetarian; 50-day shelf life; NT$220 for 15.
- Yu Jen Shin Butter Pastry, Original, 3 pieces: Butter pastry from a long-established Taichung brand; lacto vegetarian. KKday says Japanese visitors favor local pastries such as butter pastry (no brand was named). 21-day shelf life, NT$180 for 3.
5. Taiwanese supermarkets: small snacks
- I-Mei Milk Puffs 57g: Bite-size puffs from I-Mei, founded in 1934, with a crisp shell and milk filling. NT$36 per bag on the official site, so you can buy several to hand out.
- Chung Hsiang Natural Face Scallion Soda Crackers, 198g: Savory, crunchy soda crackers with green onion, available in ordinary supermarkets.

7. Before you fly to Japan: tax refunds, duty-free allowances and liquids
- Taiwan VAT refund: At participating stores showing the "Tax Refund Shopping" sign, if you spend at least NT$2,000 (tax included) at the same store on the same day, you can claim a refund with your passport. The goods must leave Taiwan with you within 90 days. Some stores offer an on-the-spot refund for purchases up to NT$48,000. Goods opened or used in Taiwan are not eligible.
- Japan's duty-free allowance on arrival: Travelers aged 20 or over may bring 3 bottles of alcohol (counted as 760ml each). Other goods are capped at ¥200,000 in total overseas market value, and items whose combined overseas value per item type is ¥10,000 or less are generally duty-free.
- Put liquids in checked baggage: Liquids such as Taiwan Beer or jam in containers over 100ml cannot go in your carry-on. Check them in, or buy them after security.
8. Japan quarantine: what you can and cannot bring
| Item | Allowed into Japan? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Baked sweets with egg or dairy (pineapple cake, nougat, etc.) | ✅ Usually yes | Under the Animal Quarantine Service's "non-designated item standards" in force from July 2026, sweets made with heat-set egg (standard 41) and dairy products for non-commercial use up to 10kg (standard 55) are outside animal quarantine. |
| Tea leaves | ✅ Yes | Processed tea is not subject to plant quarantine. |
| Store-bought dried mango | ✅ Yes | The Plant Protection Station lists dried fruit such as mango as not requiring plant quarantine. |
| Dried guava | ⚠️ Check first | Guava is not on that dried-fruit list. Sugar-preserved plant products are generally outside quarantine, but if unsure, ask at the airport plant quarantine counter. |
| Fresh fruit (mango, lychee, guava, papaya, banana, etc.) | ❌ No | These fresh fruits from Taiwan cannot be brought into Japan. Pineapple needs an official Taiwanese inspection certificate and inspection on arrival, so most travelers should not try. |
| Meat floss, jerky, pastries with meat filling | ❌ No | Bringing in meat products without quarantine is illegal. Violators face up to 3 years' imprisonment or a fine of up to ¥3 million. |
| Instant noodles with meat retort pouches (e.g., Man Han Feast) | ⚠️ Not recommended | Under the non-designated item standards, dried instant-noodle toppings (standard 31) and qualifying retort pouches (standards 3 and 4) can be exempt from animal quarantine. Travelers can hardly judge this themselves, so declare them at the animal quarantine counter; the safest choice is to eat them in Taiwan. |
